Imaging Plasmas with Coded Aperture Methods Instead of Conventional Optics [ PDF ]
Pakorn Wongwaitayakornkul and Paul M. Bellan
Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (2012)
I worked on the prototype of coded aperture imaging camera to be used for imaging X-ray coming from magnetic reconnection.
A Tellurium Frequency Reference For Re-pumping During Laser-cooling of Strontium [ PDF ]
Pakorn Wongwaitayakornkul and Thomas Killian
Physics Senior Thesis (2013)
I worked on the development of a new repumping system for laser-cooled strontium atoms using a laser operating at 481 nm. The project includes characterization of the new laser, construction of the temperature control system, and the spectroscopy of the tellurium cell.
A 3D High-Speed Probe for Measuring the Magnetic Components of a Whistler Wave [ PDF ]
Pakorn Wongwaitayakornkul, Xiang Zhai, and Paul M. Bellan
Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (2013)
I made a 3D fast (10-30 MHz) magnetic probe for measuring whistler wave from magnetic reconnection
A Non-Invasive Diagnostic Tool for Cardiac Pressure Gradients [ PDF ]
Pakorn Wongwaitayakornkul, Muhammad S. Shamim, Craig Rusin, Elijah Bolin, and Matthias Heinkenschloss
CAAM Senior Project (2014)
We developed a mathematical model to accurately transform echocardiogram data into pressure gradient information accessible to clinicians.
Apex Dips of Experimental Flux Ropes: Helix or Cusp? [ DOI ]
Pakorn Wongwaitayakornkul, Magnus A. Haw, Hui Li, Paul M. Bellan
ApJ, 848, 2 (2017)
We presented a new theory for the presence of apex dips in certain experimental flux ropes.
Reverse Current Model for Coronal Mass Ejection Cavity Formation [ DOI ]
Magnus A. Haw, Pakorn Wongwaitayakornkul, Hui Li, and Paul M. Bellan
ApJL, 862, L15 (2018)
We reported a new model for explaining the three-part structure of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). We proposed that the cavity was formed due to a diamagnetic effect of the plasma in ideal MHD regime. The dynamics of the obeservational, experimental, and simulated flux rope is tested with a simple 1D equation of motion.
Magnetically Induced Current Piston for Generating Extreme-ultraviolet Fronts in the Solar Corona [ DOI ]
Pakorn Wongwaitayakornkul, Magnus A. Haw, Hui Li, Paul M. Bellan
ApJ, 874, 137 (2019)
We proposed a hybrid model where EUV waves are compressional fronts driven by a reverse electric current layer induced by the time-dependent CME core current.
Magnetic Rayleigh-Taylor Instability in an Experiment Simulating a Solar Loop [ DOI ]
Yang Zhang, Pakorn Wongwaitayakornkul, Paul M. Bellan
ApJL, 889, L32 (2020)
We presented an observation of a hoop force driven magnetic rayleigh-Taylor instability in a laboratory experiment simulating a solar coronal loop
Determination of a Macro- to Micro-Scale Progression Leading to a Magnetized Plasma Disruption [ DOI ]
Byonghoon Seo, Pakorn Wongwaitayakornkul, Magnus A. Haw, Ryan S. Marshall, Hui Li, and Paul M. Bellan
PoP, 27, 022109 (2020)
We reported observations and a model of a sausage-to-kink instability sequence that breaks off the plasma and causes a fast magnetic reconnection.
Dynamics of an Arched Magnetically-Twisted Current-Carrying Plasma [ DOI ]
Pakorn Wongwaitayakornkul
PhD dissertation (2020)
Experimental and numerical studies of a dense magnetically-twisted plasma and their applications to solar plasmas are the subject of this dissertation.
3D Numerical Simulation of Kink-Driven Rayleigh–Taylor Instability Leading to Fast Magnetic Reconnection [ DOI ]
Pakorn Wongwaitayakornkul, Hui Li, Paul M. Bellan
ApJL, 895, L7 (2020)
We simulated the kink-driven Rayleigh-Taylor, an MHD instability cascade, using 3D MHD code and compared it with the previous theoretical and experimental results.
Inviscid damping of an elliptical vortex subject to an external strain flow [ DOI ]
Pakorn Wongwaitayakornkul, James R. Danielson, Noah C. Hurst, Daniel H. E. Dubin, and C. M. Surko
We studied the oscillatory motion of a two-dimensional vortex under the presence of an applied strain field. The experiments were performed using columnar electron plasmas in Penning-Malmberg trap. We found that interestingly the damping rate does not change significantly over a wide range of strain rates and we explored other high amplitude perturbation effects.
